Leaping with achievement

BRYANSTON – Two cubs of the 1st Bryanston group were recently awarded the prestigious Leaping Wolf award.

Prestigious Leaping Wolf awards were handed out to Cub Cameron Brown and Cub Craig Pienaar of the 1st Bryanston Scout Group recently.

The Leaping Wolf is the highest award a Cub can attain and must be completed before their 11th birthday when they move up to the Scout Troop.

To earn this award, both boys had to complete a number of special tasks and projects including a community greening project as well as researching a topical global issue and what could be done about it.

They also learned about different techniques and had to do a short presentation on the benefits for the other children in the Cub pack. Each child also had to choose a special personal challenge, which they worked on over several months, in order to finally complete their badge.

According to the adult leader in the group, Marisa Rakic, “The Leaping Wolf award takes a significant amount of individual effort and dedication.”

Rakic said this is something the child works on, independent of the structured Cub programme, which starts to develop basic planning and leadership skills.

Cameron, who joined the group a year ago, is a committed Cub who gets up early in the morning to travel from Hartbeespoort to attend the meetings of the Saturday Pack each week.

Craig, who’s been a member of the Friday Cub Pack since he was seven, said, “I enjoy being with my friends and going on all the camps and different outings with the Pack. My highlight was learning to play the drums as part of my personal challenge for the Leaping Wolf.”

The 1st Bryanston Group celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and to mark this achievement, they invite past members to help record the group’s history by sharing their old stories, photographs and contact details of old members.
