Fun for retired people at the Sandton Probus meeting

SANDTON – The Sandton Probus Club is a social club for retired and semi-retired people that meet up once a month.

The Sandton Probus Club held their monthly meeting at the Bryanston Sports Club with various activities and a guest speaker.

At the meeting, the club was joined by the Probus president of South Africa, Rodney Frances who provided some insight on what Probus was. Frances said because there were not many organisations designed for retired people to get together and have fun, Probus was a social club created for retired professional and business people with the aim to stimulate interest and participation.

“It provides the opportunity for regular gatherings,” he said.

“Probus clubs meet monthly, usually over a meal and with minimum formalities.”

He added that there were currently 95 clubs with about 3 800 active members across the country.

“There are three categories of membership, men, women or mixed membership clubs.” He said each club was independent and chose their own activities.

Dian Lavery, secretary for the Sandton Probus said the club was founded under the name of Parktown Probus Club in 1995 and the decision was made to change the name to Sandton Probus Club.

“There are currently 50 members at the club and there is a reasonable ratio between male and female members,” she said. “Applications from couples are especially welcome.”

The Sandton Probus meets on the last Tuesday of every month at the Bryanston Sports Club for a brief official meeting, followed by lunch and a guest speaker.

“The annual membership costs R170 and a variety of lunch dishes can be ordered from a special menu.”

Lavery said they invited a guest speaker every month and organised occasional outings to places of interest.

“This month’s presentation was given by Jos Scharrer, based on a book she has recently written entitled The Dutch Resistance Revealed, telling the true story of her late father-in-law Henry Scharrer who operated within the Dutch Resistance in WWII helping Allied airmen to escape the Netherlands.”

Lavery said on 24 May the club has organised a guided tour of the Museum of the Holocaust and Genocide.
