Learners display their artistic flair at Lycée Jules Verne exhibition

MORNINGSIDE – The exhibition featured a large number of rhinos as the learners are being taught about poaching.

The Lycée Jules Verne school hosted an art exhibition at the Morningside Shopping Centre to display a wide variety of artwork created by learners.

The exhibition was on display from 16 to 22 April. Every child from grades 000 – 9 had artwork on display at the exhibition.

The official launch was held on 17 April with members from the French Consulate in attendance. Sonia Doña Perez, the consul general of France opened the event.

“The evening was a success and a lot of parents came to see their children’s works and we are very proud of our students,” said Olivia Bihry, communications manager for the school.

The masterpiece of this exhibition was a giant rhino, made of papier-mâché and nearly four metres long, which was displayed at the centre of the exhibition. Bihry added that the exhibition focused on rhinos in order to educate learners about poaching and the plight that the animals face.

In groups of four, grades 4 and 5 created 42 small rhinos. They also assisted in painting the large rhino in the style of Jackson Pollock, an America painter famed for his unique style of drip painting. The rhinos on display each demonstrate the children’s interpretation of his style.

Other projects on display featured dinosaurs, monsters, graffiti and art created using recycled objects.
