Sandton based St Davids Marists impress with matric results

SANDTON – St Davids Marists shine in 2017 matric results.

The 117 boys of the St Davids Marists matric class have achieved a 100 per cent pass rate as well as a 97 per cent bachelor’s degree pass, with 196 distinctions across 19 subjects (including AP mathematics and AP English). This translates into an average of 1,7 distinctions per candidate.
For the second consecutive year, a St David’s pupil (Merrick Hughes) has achieved 100 per cent for maths, with an overall 43 per cent of maths pupils achieving distinctions.

Mike Thiel, executive headmaster of St David’s Marist Inanda, is proud of the schools’ achievements. “In a year in which we have been privileged to celebrate the bicentenary of the Marist Institute internationally and 150 years of Marist education in South Africa and Africa, the matric Class of 2017 has given us further reason to celebrate, with a set of matric results of which they, and we, can be proud.”

Top students Merrick Hughes and Matthew Benning both achieved eight distinctions. Merrick achieved 100 per cent in maths and a 90 per cent average across his eight subjects Their achievements are additionally impressive given their additional responsibilities as head and deputy head prefects, respectively.

Michel De Laroche, Alastair Dunn and Jonathan Parkin each achieved seven distinctions (incl AP subjects).

“The Class of 2017 is a group of young men of whom we are exceptionally proud. As leaders and seniors of the school during the past year, they continually strove to uphold the Marist values that we hold dear. They led by example, displaying a commitment to their school and to their personal goals and a work ethic that will hold them in good stead in their tertiary studies and life in general,” added Thiel.

“We wish our matric Class of 2017 a successful and exciting journey beyond the gates of St David’s and look forward to welcoming them back as Marist Old Boys in the near future and in years to come. We have no doubt that they are young men who will make a significant and positive impact on our world.

“The school is situated in the heart of Sandton. The skyline of this thriving business district is a constant reminder to the boys and staff of St David’s that, in educating the leaders of tomorrow, the school’s mission is to be an African school preparing boys to take their place in society and to build South Africa as enquiring, well-balanced individuals aware of their social responsibilities to the wider community, and ready to respond with compassion and justice to the realities of society.”
