Dessert connoisseurs converge at Joburg’s first ever Dessert Fest

SANDTON – Dessert lovers converged at the first ever Dessert Fest over the weekend, showcasing all things sweet.

Joburgers with a sweet tooth convened at the first ever Dessert Fest hosted at Sally Mustang from 2 to 3 December.

Dessert connoisseurs and foodies walked through a pathway of colourful cupcakes to arrive at the Mustang Room, where the Dessert Fest began. Dessert lovers explored the offerings of 23 vendors showcasing a wide range of out-of-the-ordinary sweet treats.

Organiser of the event Tammy Makadooj said, “Our event is a fun way of celebrating everything sweet and is the first of its kind in Joburg. I’ve seen this happening overseas and have a real sweet tooth for cake and treats. I’ve brought together vendors that you won’t see in a mall to show off their creations.”

Everything from vegan ice cream to traditional South African favourites like koeksisters and milk tart were on display and ready to be tasted. Makadooj said the event also showed off a variety of South African cultures including the traditional Indian Burfee dessert, which was a particular highlight.

Makadooj said that over 600 tickets were sold before the start of the festival, with many more people expected to buy at the door.

She added that the event was about supporting local brands as well as displaying some top international trends.

One of the event highlights was welcoming Alice Chan, star baker from BBC’s The Great South African Bake Off, who recreated her show-stopper Death By Chocolate Cake to fans.
