Sandton SPCA receives 40 animals a week

SANDTON – The number of animals being brought into the SPCA increases every year.

Sandton SPCA would like to thank the community for its continued support in giving donations to the animal pound and adoptions.

General manager Jaco Pieterse urged the community to continue with such support as the pound looks after many animals.

He explained, “We receive animals on a daily basis and about 40 a week. This is the result of uncontrolled breeding and people not being able to afford to look after their animals. The SPCA is acting on behalf of the City of Johannesburg as the animal pound and therefore all stray animals are also brought to our kennels. The SPCA is the only animal welfare organisation that may not turn an animal away by law.”

He added that more adoptions would be very welcome and added, “At the Sandton SPCA we are very fortunate to have anything from 50 to 80 adoptions a month. We have a large volunteer support group and our animals are networked on social media and in our local newspaper, which assists with getting our animals adopted.”

The number of animals being brought into the SPCA increases every year. The tough economic situation is also not helping, resulting in more people suffering and ultimately bringing their animals to the SPCA as they can no longer care for them, he concluded.
