Glen Atholl plagued by delivery service issues

Residents of Glen Atholl have been left angered after lack of service delivery has left the area plagued with illegal dumping sites, poor condition of roads and displaced persons.

Residents of Glen Atholl have been left angered after lack of service delivery has left the area plagued with illegal dumping sites, poorly condition roads and displaced persons.

Chad Reimers, a resident, lodged his complaints with relevant departments and Ward 91 councillor, Jeffrey Pietersen.

“There are several areas that require assistance, the three that are the worst is the dumping that takes place on Boero Road, the need to resurface Riverside and Boero roads and also removing the vagrants who live next to Villa Sheugnet near the M1 North off-ramp,” said Reimers.

He said there needs to be a sustainable solution to the squatting issue.

Mike Clingman points to the rubble that has been illegally dumped.

“There are about 10 to 12 people living there and they are visible to people in the complex. The people who live here are waste pickers and they make fires, noise and create rubbish everywhere.

“The roads have been patched a lot and we were told that the roads would be resurfaced, however, they have not yet been informed when this will actually take place.”

Another concerned resident, Mike Clingman, said the dumping is a serious issue and the rubble needs to be removed.

Pietersen said the area needs to be cleared and the turnaround time is about two weeks. “The fines that are given to illegal dumpers are not sufficient to deter them,” said Pietersen.

“The resurfacing has been requested and money has been allocated for several roads that need resurfacing.”

Pietersen said he would make sure that Riverside Road is on the list, however, he is unable to say exactly when this would happen.

Pietersen said Metro police are responsible for removing them, but the vagrants usually return within a day or two. “It is not illegal for them to be there and a different solution needs to be found such as the building of shelters.

“Grass and tree cutting in public spaces is the responsibility of City Parks and residents should contact them.”
