You can still get a speeding fine in Johannesburg

JOBURG – The City of Joburg 'sets the record straight' on speed law enforcement in the municipality.

Motorists must not be deceived into thinking that parts of Joburg are now speed-free zones with fixed speeding cameras having been removed.  Metro police will continue to clamp down on speedsters and bad drivers.

This according to MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, who said the City cancelled a contract with a speed enforcement service in January and since then the service provider has been removing fixed cameras.

Michael Sun, the MMC for Public Safety with Executive Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba at the launch of the traffic hotline earlier this year.

Sun said the City has procured speed enforcement cameras and Metro police officers have started operating handheld speed cameras at various speeding hotspots.

“The tender advertisement for a new service provider is set to be published within the next three weeks,” Sun said.  The new contract will see the Department of Public Safety owning both the system and speed camera infrastructure.

“The public is advised not to believe that there is no speed law enforcement in the City.”
