Cubs scouts host their very own ‘Master Chef’ in Sandton

Cubs from the Sandton District participated in their own version of Master Chef by holding a cooking competition on 10 June.

The theme for the event was Wild, Weird and Wacky, and 21 teams from 1st Bryanston, 1st Fourways, 1st Fourways, 1st Morningside, 1st Parkmore, 1st Peter Place and 1st Rivertrail Cub participated.

Teams were challenged to prepare and cook a three-course meal, including a beverage, over an open fire or by using alternative cooking methods like gas. They were tasked with preparing a menu, decorating and laying a table according to their chosen theme and then serving their culinary delight to a panel of judges.

The ingredients for the main course were only provided on the day, which added to the mystery and suspense.

Event organiser and judge, Bronwyn Peake said, “The food was very tasty and the creativity shown by the Cubs in decorating their tables and dressing according to their theme was very impressive.”

The Wild, Weird and Wacky Garden Restaurant team from 1st Bryanston took overall honours, while 1st Fourways Safari Junior Master Chef team took second and Moana’s Cooking Goddesses from Bryanston took third. There was also a special mention for 1st Morningside for the best table setting with their Jurassic Park-inspired theme.

Peake expressed that the event was a great learning experience for all who participated and it may encourage some children to pursue a career in hospitality in the future.
