The Purple Epilepsy Awareness Day took place recently in Rivonia, Sandton.

Epilepsy Awareness SA support groups took to the streets for the second year, to raise awareness of the largest epilepsy event ever hosted in South Africa. Traffic in the area stopped for one hour to allow the walkers to raise awareness of the disease.

Just over 400 people walked the 5km from Sandton City to Mercedez-Benz Sandton and back again. Everyone wore their purple shirts, sponsored by Stratum Benefits and the spirit of purple was seen on balloons and umbrellas.

People as far as Secunda came to show their support and many from epilepsy hostels such as Reea Foundation in Craighall Park and Springs, who had never been to Sandton before. Orphans living with epilepsy also took part in the awareness day.

Highlights of the day included Scouts from four different troops in SA acting as marshals. DJ Arch Jr provided the music and made the crowd go wild, and Assault Riders from Alex performed stunts for the crowd.
