The South African Red Cross Society hopes new mobile app will save lives
SANDTON – The society hopes to reach as many communities in need as possible through the app.
The launch of the South African Red Cross Society mobile app took place in Sandton.
After the society’s head office relocated last year from Hatfield to Sandton, the society now aims to centralise its programmes and be accessible to communities such as Alexandra, Diepsloot and Cosmo City.

“This was the first nationwide initiative for the society’s new senior leadership. With the new board in place, our humanitarian organisation can only grow and improve in reaching our mandate of alleviating suffering wherever it may be,” said Lungile Khambule, communications manager for the society.
The society hopes to reach as many communities in need as possible through the app. It is free to download and users are not only able to see where local humanitarian projects are taking place so they can volunteer, but people in disaster areas will receive emergency alerts, individuals and corporates can make online donations, locals can register for training courses and see blood donor locations, among other things.
The app will also help provide the society with resource mobilisation opportunities and will improve their ability to render life-changing services.
The app provides users with access to a variety of features including:
- Membership and access to the society’s services and benefits
- Volunteering in local projects
- National and local emergency alerts
- Make donations
- Register for training courses and events
- Access updates and news from the society
- Purchase Red Cross equipment
- Donate blood.
