It is the duty of firearm owners to make sure that they comply with the Firearms Control Act of 2000 and renew their licences while they are still valid.
Firearm licences must be renewed 90 days before the expiry date.
Section 27 of the Act refers to the period of validity of each type of licence and permit that is issued. These dates also appear on the licence cards issued by the police.

In terms of Section 28 of the Act, a firearm licence terminates after expiry of the relevant period referred to in Section 27, unless it is renewed in terms of Section 24 of the Firearms Control Act of 2000.
The firearm owner has the option of selling, donating, deactivating or surrendering the firearm, which must be concluded before the relevant expiry date. If an application for the renewal has been lodged before the licence has expired, the existing licence remains valid until the application has been decided.
