Scam warning

SANDTON – Owners of stolen or hijacked vehicles have been asked for money by people claiming to be police.

Sandton police have warned the public about a new scam involving owners of hijacked or stolen vehicles who receive a call from people posing as police officers.

Sandton Police Station spokesperson Constable David Mothapo said, “The person then claims the vehicle has been found somewhere in the Western Cape or other areas and asks for money to cover administration and transport costs to return the vehicle. The police will not and cannot ask for money for whatever reason from the [complainant].”

For genuine cases, the complainant will receive an SMS once a case has been opened and registered on the system. “The SMS will contain all the details such as the date, case number and the name and rank of the investigating officer.

“If there are any doubts regarding the validity of a phone call from an officer, contact the Sandton Police Station to verify the identity of the officer. It is important to always verify who the person is that is phoning you,” Mothapo said.

Details: Sandton Police Station 011 722 4200.
