When asked how it feels to be entering his final year of school, Hughes said, “It is a daunting thought to think that this is my last year of school. It actually takes a while to sink in and I hope that I will be able to appreciate all of the special things this year, like our last rugby match. It will be tough to leave all of my friends behind.”
However, the new head boy stressed that he is determined to make this year the best year of his schooling life.

Hughes has an empathetic view on leadership and focuses on servant leadership. In his mind, heads of schools should set a good example through hard work and should not be feared by those they serve. “Integrity is everything. We should lead in a way that serves everyone below and around us. Leaders are dedicated servants and all big institutions are run from the bottom up.”
His top three goals for the school this year are for all the first the sports teams to win 70 per cent of their matches. Secondly, Hughes would love to see 20 of his peers achieve general honours blazers and, lastly, he wants the entire high school to perform a sum total of 5 000 community service hours.
He is passionate about community work and wants his school to get on board with helping less fortunate community members. “Last year, I went to a cystic fibrosis home and learned that these patients desperately need food items such as peanut butter and sardines. I would love the whole school to get involved and if each boy donated a jar of peanut butter, imagine what a difference we could make.”
The St Davids Class of 2016 inspired Hughes and taught him many life lessons.
“They taught me that we are infinitely stronger standing together than standing alone. Together anything is possible and we can achieve anything that we want.”
