Theft out of vehicles on the rise

SANDTON – The Sandton police have issued a warning to residents to be alert when parking their vehicles in public spaces with seven cases of theft out of vehicles reported in the past week.

 

Theft out of motor vehicles is on the increase during the festive season with a total of seven incidents reported in the past week.

The Sandton Police Station has issued a warning to residents to be alert when they exit their vehicles in public places.

Constable David Mothapo, spokesperson for the Sandton Police Station said, “People should be aware of their surroundings and other people when they stop somewhere to do their shopping.”

Mothapo added that the criminals were targeting laptops and other valuables that were left in vehicles. “One of the hotspots for these thefts is at the McDonald’s in Woodmead and the modus operandi remains the same in most cases, however, it can happen anywhere.”

According to Mothapo, the criminals still use jamming devices and people should always check to see if their doors are locked and must never walk away without checking.

“Residents should lock away their valuables in the boot at work or home before they enter a car park. “Many people lock their valuables away while in the car park, which gives the criminals a view of the valuables that you may leave in the car,” said Mothapo.

He stressed that motorists should be alert of people hanging around the parking area when they parked their vehicles.
