Mayor sends condolences to Everlate’s family

JOBURG – Executive Major extends condolences to the Chauke family.

The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba has extended his condolences and those of the City and Johannesburg residents to the Setswetla informal settlement-based family of Everlate Chauke, who died after being swept away by the recent flash floods.

The body of the three-year-old girl was discovered by a recycler along the river in Buccleuch on 22 November.

Following forensic testing by the South African Police Service, it has been confirmed that it is indeed the body of Chauke, who went missing after last month’s flash floods in Alexandra and Marlboro.

“I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the Chauke family for their tragic loss. No parent should ever have to bury their own child, and I cannot imagine anything more painful,” Mashaba said.

He added that her life was taken far too soon. “I pray that the Chauke family can find some closure in the fact that [the body of] their daughter has been found.

“May the tragic loss of Everlate be a call to action for us to find real solutions to the serious housing and infrastructure challenges we face, which have rendered people vulnerable to this kind of disaster.”
