Miracles can happen

SANDTON – A young six-year-old boy is able to breathe without an oxygen machine for the first time in his life.

Ayaan Bhoopal, a fiercely brave six-year-old who attends Buccleuch Primary School, can breathe properly for the first time in his life.
His mother, Seshma Bhoopal explained that his troubled journey began several years ago. “Ayaan was six weeks old in June 2010 when we met the amazing Dr Jeff Harrisberg. He diagnosed and saved Ayaan [who has a congenital heart defect], and since helped us walk every step of the way, this most challenging journey with sincere care.”
Ayaan has had five open heart surgeries in his lifetime. He also attended school every day with a portable oxygen machine to assist him with his breathing.
His mother said her son’s most recent operation at Sunninghill Hospital was a cardiac catheterisation on 10 November. “Doctors have been planning and discussing [the operation] for months and the date kept changing. And we said that God’s date is the only date for Ayaan. And yes, this was the date set by God.
“The operation took three hours and the doctor closed the fenestration [hole] in [Ayaan’s] heart. [The doctor] also stretched a few veins and put a four and a half centimeter stent which closes the hole.”
The result of this operation was nothing short of amazing as Ayaan can now breathe without the oxygen machine for the first time in his life.
Seshma added that she was eternally grateful to Harrisberg for his tireless efforts throughout her son’s short life. “No matter how tough it gets, [Harrisberg] has always done his best in watching over Ayaan and giving us hope.
“And now, with the crucial procedures performed recently, he has helped Ayaan get off oxygen.”
Seshma said there was a notable difference in her son’s appearance. “His lips, tongue and nails were always blue and purple. Now for the first time, he is pink and is looking healthier and better.”
On 15 November she proudly said, “Ayaan is having a better day today in [the pediatric ward]. Just wanting to go home. “All he wants to do is a head stand, ride his bicycle and go to Gold Reef City.”
