Drug awareness campaign

WENDYWOOD – In a joint operation between police, Metro police, Community Safety and the K9 unit, an awareness campaign and drug search was conducted at Wendywood High School.

 

A drug awareness campaign and drug and weapon search were recently conducted by police officers at Wendywood High School.

The campaign, which speaks about the dangers and effects of drugs on schoolchildren, aims to ensure that schools are a safe and drug-free space. It forms part of the social crime prevention operation which was coordinated by Sergeant Cynthia Segoa of Sandton Police Station.

“It was a joint operation between Sandton police, Metro police, the Department of Community Safety as well as the K9 Unit,” said Segoa.

She said police officers conduct weekly campaigns and searches at different schools to continuously raise awareness of the issue.

According to deputy principal of the high school, Kubashini Pillay, it is a yearly thing to bring in the police to conduct such a search and they have not had one this year. “It is taken as a preventative measure,” said Pillay.

During the operation, the school and the pupils were searched and there were sniffer dogs from the K9 Unit present to help detect the presence of drugs. Small amounts of dagga, cigarettes, matches, electronic cigarette oil and two unidentified tablets were found and confiscated.

No pupils were arrested during the operation.
