Cycling Indaba to hit Sandton

SANDTON – Gauteng will host an international cycling indaba on 11 and 12 October.

 

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, is hosting a two-day Cycling Indaba to be held at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) offices in Sandton from 11 to 12 October at 8am.

The event will take place at 19 Fredman Drive, IDC offices, Sandton.

The Indaba is aimed at creating a platform for cyclists, local bicycle companies, spheres of government and stakeholders to exchange knowledge and expertise with cycling experts from the Netherlands.

The event is based on five pillars of encouraging people to cycle more, co-creating, unlocking business opportunities, healthy living as well as creating space in our cities.

Gauteng’s 25-year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25) spells out the challenges faced by the Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) sector. It further states that NMT needs to be adequately accommodated on the roads in order to change the current situation.

The department advocates for the use of non-motorised transport to reduce congestion on Gauteng’s roads; create cleaner and sustainable cities and a healthier population.

It is hoped that the knowledge and experience in the cycling fields would contribute to the success of the Indaba in terms of co-conceiving sustainable Non-Motorised Transport solutions.
