Breakfast in a jar gets children far

Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, Charity Begins with Me has started a project to provide breakfast to underprivileged schools, shelters and families in need.

“Breakfast seemed to be the obvious choice as most shelters only provide lunch or dinner. Children struggle to focus at school if they are hungry and, therefore, many will argue that breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” founder of Charity Begins with Me, Stephan Ferreira said.

These thoughts sparked the Breakfast Jar Initiative which strives to provide a convenient, but nutritional meal. Ferreira decided instant porridge should be the meal of choice because it only requires water instead of milk, making it more affordable.

“A single serving of instant porridge is packed into a little jar with a plastic spoon, which makes it convenient for kids to enjoy at home, school, or even on the bus. All they have to do is to add a glass of water,” Ferreira explained.

The breakfast jars can be packed up to two weeks in advance and, therefore, Charity Begins with Me is able to deliver a two-week supply. The empty jars are collected and refilled to supply breakfast for the next two weeks.

“Right now we are delivering five meals a week to 36 kids so, roughly around 720 meals a month. Two other schools have also approached me for help. So far the community has been very supportive and we hope to expand and grow this project,” said Ferreira.
