The 8th of September is International Literacy Day

JOBURG - UNESCO celebrates International Literacy Day.

In 1965, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), declared September 8 to be International Literacy Day.

Since this proclamation, schools, communities and organisations have united around the world on this day to raise awareness in the hope that it will enable increased accessibility to education in developing nations.

This year, the World Literacy Foundation’s has created an innovative campaign that aims to eliminate the digital divide for students in the developing world, and increase student engagement via an exciting digital learning platform.

According to data released by the Unesco Institute for Statistics, literacy rates for adults and youth continue to rise. Young women between the ages of 15 to 24 are making the strongest gains, yet still lag behind young men.

In 2011, 87 percent of female youth had basic literacy skills, compared to 92 percent of males. Overall, more than half of countries with data have youth literacy rates of 95 percent or higher.
