Kwame Addo-Obiri (13), a Grade 7 pupil from Crawford Preparatory School in Sandton, came second overall in Gauteng at this year’s Zulu Olympiad which was hosted at the end of July.
Addo-Obiri, who resides in Midrand, received a silver medal for his efforts.
The Zulu Olympiad is an annual event comprising three rounds where pupils are assessed on language, grammar and poetry.
The Grade 7 pupil takes Zulu as a school subject, after he changed from Afrikaans last year.
His mother, Nolwazi Mgilane said, “[We] speak a mix of Xhosa and Zulu at home and he did not have to prepare too much for the Zulu Olympiad as he relied on general knowledge to make it through.”
