Sandton team takes fourth in canoe race

SANDTON — Three Sandton residents took fourth place in the Centurion 9 Miler canoe race on 30 July.

 

The Centurion 9 Miler canoe race held on 30 July concluded with dozens of canoeists crossing the finish line, including a team of three Sandton residents who finished in fourth place, just seconds behind the top three finishers.

Wayne Jacobs, his brother Bruce and Sean Martin, who are members of the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, finished the race in a time of 01:20:00. They raced in a K3, a popular canoe due to the extra power it can provide.

 

They were also the first K3 team to finish the event and were awarded first place in the Sub Veteran age group.

The three top canoeing teams were Siseko Ntondini and Siyabonga Tyiki in first place, Loveday Zondi and Thando Ngamlana in second place and TC Smit and Nicolas Oldert in third place.

The race took place on Rietvlei Dam and canoeists paddled five laps around the dam.

This race generally marks the beginning of the training period for canoeists who wish to compete in the Hansa Fish River Marathon which takes place in October in Cradock, Eastern Cape.
