67 minutes with TLC

SANDTON – The touching stories of Mandela Day continue as Sandton residents give back to a children's home.

Mandela Day inspired yet another act of kindness from residents.

In the article, A home away from home, Bronkhorstfontein-based TLC Children’s Home was described as a second family for orphaned children.

Sandton-based Lauren Lopes, who handles the home’s marketing said, “This year, TLC Children’s Home decided to have a three-day event around Mandela Day. [We planned] activities geared towards helping the home.”

Lopes highlighted that they used social media to find volunteers who could assist with the activities.

“The aims of the event were to provide community support for TLC’s projects and to improve the living conditions at the home. We also aimed to increase our reach in the wider community and introduce more people to the home. We really need to increase our supporter base and we plan on using social media to do this.”

Lopes was proud to say that TLC had managed to achieve all of their goals and more thanks to the generous support of community members on, and beyond, Mandela Day.

One of the volunteers, Suzie Cameron said, “For Mandela Day, all South Africans have been challenged to devote just 67 minutes to community service as a tribute to Nelson Mandela’s life-long example.”

Cameron explained that TLC, with the help of full-time and part-time volunteers, aspires to create a family environment where every child can grow up feeling loved.

She added, “In order to help children to remember their time at TLC, as well as the milestones they achieved while in the home, every child is given a scrapbook of photos and memories when they leave.

“This was one of the tasks set for the Mandela Day volunteers. We were shown into a cozy classroom which was jam-packed with donated scrapbooking bits and pieces which we could use to create some beautiful memories for the children in the house.”

She said that they were given photographs of the children, each neatly packed and labelled for each child. “These pictures showed holidays, birthdays, special occasions and fun with friends and volunteers. These pictures were all the inspiration necessary to create some memories for the very special children of TLC.”
