Food for all

SANDTON - To help stave off the cold and hunger of winter in disadvantaged communities, the Maslow Hotel in Sandton delivered food and blankets to those in need via its mobile soup kitchen.

The mobile kitchen, which was manned by Miss South Africa 2016, Ntandoyenkosi Kunene, hotel staff and American singer Tevin Campbell visited Reabilwe Community Centre in Benoni East to deliver warmth and sustenance on Mandela Day.

This year, the project to deliver food and warmth to communities in need began on 11 July and will run through to 5 August. The food truck is committed to feeding thousands of people during this year’s project handing out 300 cups of soup a day, three times a week. Maslow’s chef Jason Millar, the man in charge of making the soup, is also committed to putting as much nutrition as possible into the food.

“I am passionate about making a difference, I would love to feed all those who are hungry, everywhere. But since that is not possible, we want to ensure that those people we do feed get a highly nutritious and delicious meal. It might be the only thing they get to eat all day,” said Millar.

“We will be serving different soups every day and they will be high-end soups as if you were eating in a good restaurant. Effort is everything and my team knows how important that is to me,” Millar continued.

Maslow general manager Ashwin Jose said, “We hope our pop-up soup kitchen will help add some cheer into the lives of those most affected by the chill of winter.”
