The Bicycle Man of Parkmore

PARKMORE – The Bicycle Man, Jeffery Monageng, has started a repair and maintenance business in Parkmore.

Cycling from Soweto to Parkmore every day, 61-year-old Jeffery Monageng is becoming a fixture on 12th Street and is known as the ‘Bicycle Man’.

Monageng offers bicycle repair and maintenance services to the local community.

Born in Pretoria in 1954, Monageng began his passion for riding and repairing bicycles in 1982 when he began to work with a local French immigrant who introduced him to the mechanics and wonders surrounding bicycles. “[He] taught me everything I know today, from how to build the bike from scratch to fixing little parts,” he said.

He added that everything he had learnt motivated him to move forward in developing a passion for bicycles, and spreading the joy and freedom of cycling to others.

Monageng started to work in Parkmore on 11th Street at a bicycle shop which has since closed, but he grabbed all the expertise and skills that he had learnt over the years and began his Bicycle Man business which operates on the corner of Marie Avenue and 12th Street in Parkmore.

He said he has been able to house his materials and tools in an office of a local doctor, who is also an avid cyclist.

Monageng hopes to share his passion for cycling with local residents, whether it be a pensioner or a child who has received his or her first bicycle, so they too can experience the pleasure of breathing in the fresh air.
