How to survive this weekend’s cold front

JOBURG – Cold front expected to hit Joburg this weekend ... tips to keep warm and safe

Emergency Management Services (EMS) has noted with concern the warning from the South African Weather Service that there will be a drop in temperature and some heavy rainfall in Johannesburg over the weekend.

This significant drop in temperature means that most of the citizens of the city will be exposed to extremely cold temperatures forcing them to use heating appliances to try and warm themselves. These appliances may be dangerous if they are used unsafely.

EMS will remain on high alert to respond to any emergency which may occur. Their main focus will be on the 189 informal settlements throughout the city since they are the most vulnerable to fires in cold weather.

Here are some safety tips:

Candle safety

  • Keep candles away from children
  • A child should not be left unattended in a room with a candle
  • Store candles, matches and lighters away from the reach of children
  • A candle should not be used to light stoves
  • A candle should not be used in a confined space.
