UPDATE: Taxi association vice chairperson shot dead, 6 injured in Marlboro shootout

MARLBORO - A shootout took place in Marlboro earlier this evening.

UPDATE: 2 June 2016, 10.30am – Lieutenant Kay Makhubela, Provincial spokesperson for the South African Police Department confirmed that at around 7pm on 1 June, a high ranking member of the Alexandra Taxi Association was shot by two suspects.

The suspects were driving a black BMW. Makhubela confirmed that the victim was declared dead on the scene and that authorities were opening a case of murder.

Makhubela also stated that they were not ruling out the fact that the incident may be related to taxi violence.

UPDATE: 1 June 2016, 10pm – According to JMPD spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, the driver who was shot dead is the vice chairperson of the Alexandra Taxi Association. (Scroll down to view images from the crime scene – WARNING: Some images may be too graphic for sensitive readers.)

UPDATE: 1 June 2016, 9pm –According to EMER-G-MED, the driver who was shot in dead in Marlboro earlier this evening has been confirmed as a taxi boss.

EMER-G-MED attended the scene and have released a statement.

The statement read: This evening, just before 6pm, EMER-G-MED paramedics responded to reports of a shooting on the corner of Marlboro Drive and South Road in Marlboro – north of Johannesburg.

It was reported by witnesses that a unknown gunmen shot a taxi owner, who was driving a Toyota SUV. The SUV then veered into oncoming traffic and collided with two other vehicles head-on.

On arrival paramedics found that the taxi owner had succumbed to his injuries – and declared him dead on the scene.

Five other people sustained minor to moderate injuries. Paramedics treated the patients for their injuries before they were transported to various nearby hospitals for further treatment and trauma counselling.

The South African Police Services were in attendance to conduct a full investigation into the events surrounding the shooting.

UPDATE: 1 June 2016, 8pm –  According to ER24, A man was driving a Toyota Prada. He suffered multiple gun shot wounds. The vehicle then went off the road and hit oncoming traffic that collided with the bakkie.

Six people were left injured and one was transported to Edenvale hospital with minor injuries. The others were assessed at the scene.

The driver of the Prada was declared dead on the scene with multiple gunshot wounds.

INITIAL REPORT: According to the Sandton CPF a drive by shooting allegedly took place in Marlboro earlier this evening.

According to Werner Vermaak, ER24 spokesperson, the shooting caused a motorist to lose control of the vehicle he was driving.

Werner said, “We are unsure of the details of the shooting and how it occurred, however, after the driver lost control of the vehicle, it collided head on with another vehicle on the road. Only one person was treated for minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.”

Further details remain unclear at this stage, however, updates will follow as more information becomes available.
