Knitting for a good cause

The San Sereno Knitting Club donates almost 600 items per year.

The San Sereno Knitting Club was started over 20 years ago and now has 25 knitters who meet regularly on Monday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm for a relaxing chat over tea, biscuits and, of course, to do some knitting.

Louise Muirhead, who organises the club meetings, is very proud of what they have accomplished this year. “Our knitters can make anything from baby wear to adult jerseys, beanies, vests and knitted squares which are then put together for blankets.”

She added that San Sereno retirement village management sponsors the wool needed.

“Once a year, on 30 May, we have a display in the main lounge showing all the work done over the year. We then divide the articles up to distribute to various charities, and then we start all over again!” said Muirhead.

The ladies of the San Sereno knitting club have produced nearly 600 items this year alone, and the oldest member of their club, Doreen Read is 102 years old.

This year’s donation includes 28 large jerseys, 47 medium jerseys, 32 small jerseys, 85 items of baby wear, 24 pairs of baby booties, two pairs of mittins, 27 scarves, two ponchos, 99 beanies, seven pairs of bed socks, 23 large blankets, 23 small blankets and 12 toys.
