Theatrical fun for Brescia House

SANDTON – Brescia House pupils take part in an exciting and prestigious drama festival.

The Raps Schools One-Act Play Festival is a competition in which various schools participate in order to show off their talented drama department.

The most recent Raps competition was an opportunity for Bryanston-based high school pupils from Brescia House to express themselves creatively.

The Brescia House drama group was directed by Grade 11 pupil, Nicole Harwood.

“It is a one-act play in which the cast, backstage crew and director are all pupils, no teacher or expert assistance is allowed. The play with the best set, ensemble, background music, lighting, directing, script, actors and actresses wins, after a series of rehearsals and plays,” explained Harwood.

The first round was held at the Market Lab Theatre in Newtown. “Three adjudicators judiciously and critically sit through various rehearsed plays. Brescia House School performed on 20 May. Their hilarious, yet meaningful, performance of The Colour of The Wind had the audience encapsulated and entertained as the cast took them on a journey.”

She said that the drama pupils from Brescia House School have been involved in early morning rehearsals for the past two months. “Getting an early start, the dedicated team put in rehearsals at 6.15am from Monday to Friday and have also rehearsed diligently on Saturday and Sunday mornings.”

Harwood said that it was wonderful to see the strong sense of friendship that developed between cast members in all of the competing schools.

“This annual, inter-school event brings together pupils from different paths of life as they compete for a place in a prestigious event on the school calendar. On the evening that Brescia House School performed, Greenside High School and Marago also showcased their drama skills. On different evenings, a number of other schools such as KES, St Johns, and St Benedicts performed.”

According to Harwood, the Raps experience allowed the pupils of Brescia House to experience a wide variety of talented performances. “It was an enlightening experience that allowed us to truly appreciate the talented South African youth.”
