Old Eds cricketers honoured at GCB awards

ILLOVO – Local cricketers receive honours at annual awards...

Although none of the Old Edwardian cricket teams won a league title last season, a number of their players were honoured at the Gauteng Cricket Board awards evening held at the Wanderers cricket stadium.

Not surprisingly, Stephen Cook, after his prolific run scoring in all four competitions, was named as the Bizhub Highveld Lions Batsman of the Year.

He led the team from the front and his contribution was critical to the success of the whole team throughout the season. Add to that the century in his Test debut for South Africa, and it was a season to cherish for the Lions captain.

Devon Conway was awarded the Gauteng Strikers Batsman of the Year following his regular contributions to the team and Mitchell van Buuren was named the U17 Player of the Year.

King Edward V11 schoolboy, Heinrich Pieterse was named the U13 Boys Player of the Year and he will surely be playing for one of Old Eds cricket teams in the forthcoming season.

Neil McKenzie was further recognised for his contribution to Gauteng cricket. His career, firstly with at Old Eds, then the Lions and finally South Africa was echoed in a speech by Cook who presented him with a collage of his career.

McKenzie responded with an emotional speech about his career, mentioning all those who had played a part in his success as a club, provincial and national player.
