Councillor nurses ward back to health

SANDTON - Meet Ward 109 councillor, Lillian Kekana.

Ward 109 councillor, Lillian Kekana is in charge of one of the most diverse wards in Johannesburg with areas such as Gallo Manor, Wynberg and Alexandra Ext 59 falling within her ward.

Ward 109 is where you’ll find informal settlements and multi-million rand mansions a stone’s throw away from each other. This poses certain challenges which other councillors do not face, but Kekana is adamant that she has done good work in the ward since she took up the position of councillor in 2011.

Kekana worked as a professional nurse before becoming a councillor, and is still active in local clinics and hospitals. “I am a nurse by profession, I used to work in the public sector, specialising in reproductive health at clinics in Soweto, and I still do a lot of work for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the community.

“Because I used to help a lot at local clinics in Marlboro and Wendywood, residents knew me and saw me as someone who could help make a difference in the area.”

Kekana added that she loves the satisfaction she receives from helping people in her ward, but that council work is not for the fainthearted and takes a lot of perseverance and determination.

Ward 109 comprises Alexandra Ext 59, Eastgate, Edenburg, Gallo Manor, Kelvin, Kelvin View, Kramerville, Marlboro Gardens Ext 1, Morningside AH, Morningside Manor, Sundown Ext 24, The Woodlands, Wendywood, Wesco Park, Woodlands Ext 4 and Wynberg Ext 4
