Female empowerment

Sandton - The Women in Leadership Development Graduation was held on 19 May in Sandton to commemorate the women who had completed a leadership programme.

Industrial company, Barloworld Equipment, hosted a special Women in Leadership Development Graduation at its Sandton offices on 19 May for several women who participated in the development programme.

At the graduation, the women who completed the programme were awarded certificates, and keynote speakers delivered inspirational speeches. The speakers were musician, Lira, and Nozipho January-Bardill, the senior adviser to the executive director of the United Nations for female development.

Asha Mungaldave, the leadership development programme manager explained, “This leadership programme, which is designed for women, takes six months to complete. The programme focuses on leadership, a sense of self, gender bias, tough conversations, networking and many other important skills.”

One of the women who completed the leadership programme, Lerato Rampa said, “During the past six months, I have undergone a journey of self-discovery and I now know myself. I have also learnt what makes a leader tick.” She went on to say that, as a female, good leadership skills are essential.

Marina Zyambo, who also participated in the programme said, “It has been the most incredible journey and I feel ready to face any challenges. I also have more confidence. The female mentor that I had during the programme helped me a lot.”

Lira gave an inspiring talk on how she was able to make the transition from being an accountant to being a world-famous songstress. She explained how her determination, as a woman, drove her to win 11 South African Music Awards.

January-Bardill said she believed that the world has a leadership crisis and that it is important to place emphasis on ethical leadership. She said women in powerful positions need to ask themselves what they are doing in their jobs, how they can uplift other women and how to make their jobs meaningful.

Lira concluded, “The key to being a successful woman is to know and love yourself.”
