A portion of Ballyclare Drive has collapsed

BRYANSTON - A portion of the road surface of Ballyclare Drive near St Audley Road in Bryanston collapsed on the early evening of 14 May.

Johannesburg Roads Agency has warned residents to avoid the section of Ballyclare Drive by St Audley Road, and at 5pm indicated that an emergency team was on their way to the collapsed road.

By 4.30pm, ward councillor Vincent Earp was at the scene and awaiting the arrival of the roads agency’s emergency team.

Earp said, “This is an absolute disaster as this road carries heavy traffic in the mornings and late afternoons during the week.” Earp alleged the damage is in the place where a contractor was laying new storm water pipes.

Earp further raised concern that there were no streetlights on the particular stretch of Ballyclare Drive at night. He said, “A car coming down or up Ballyclare Drive can go into the holes and cause further collapse.”

A resident posted a warning to other motorists on the Bryanston, River Club Community Forum Facebook page to avoid driving through the collapsed portion of the road.

This is not the first time that a Bryanston road has collapsed. On 6 March 2014, Coleraine Drive collapsed due to a sinkhole, following heavy rains.

Motorists took to Twitter to warn community members about the collapse:
