Ward councilor with a strong message

SANDTON - Ward 90 councillor, Anthony Still, describes the successes and downfalls which he has observed during his work as a councillor.

Anthony Still began his work as a ward councillor in August 2014 after a by-election.

Although he will no longer work as a ward councillor as of August this year, he will continue his services to the community as a public relations (PR) councillor.

Still said, “I have decided to become a PR councillor after the August elections as I feel as though this position will give me more flexibility moving forward.”

He explained that there have been ‘many little successes’ which often go unnoticed. “I think that the progress in a lot of the parks can be considered a success. In terms of George Lea Park, we may be finally seeing a way forward,” said Still.

“I am happy with the progress at Dunkeld Bowling Club, and Craighall Bowling Club is now turning into a well-used venue as well.”

He did, however, have a pessimistic view in terms of the issue of vagrants living in the parks in Ward 90 and said that the City did not have any big visions for the parks. He believes that the increase in vagrants in certain areas has frustrated many residents and said the issue was a serious one.

Similarly, the ward councillor sees flaws in the way waste reclaimers go about their work and feels that sufficient action needs to be taken to provide these workers with facilities to sort through the waste that they collect.

He concluded by saying that he has learned a significant amount during his work as a councillor, and said, “I have a broader, horizontal vision of the city. Should the DA win, I will feel a lot more empowered to continue my work in Johannesburg.”
