Witsie takes on showbiz

“Let me just try it,” are the words that a certain up-and-coming local entertainer lives by, and they’re definitely working for him!

Johnny Jay Khalo is a familiar face and that’s because he’s working his way up the entertainment industry ladder – so you must have seen him around somewhere.

With his silky smooth baritone, Khalo had his start in entertainment performing in a Wits theatre production as a high school student and later as a student of the university when he became one of the voices in the Wits Choir and the producer and on-air personality for three shows, La Bonne Vie, The Afrodisiac and The Afrobox on Voice of Wits FM 88.1.

“It was always something that was there. It was always something I was thinking about. The love for radio has always been there,” Khalo said.

The big dreamer doesn’t keep his head strictly in the clouds because he completed a BSC in geology and project management while pursuing a career in the public eye.

Since his days on radio, he has been involved in a number of projects where he has taken to the stage as an emcee for social and corporate events, featured in a McDonald’s advertising campaign and was even a model in the Made Man feature in Bona magazine.

While Wits got him started on his journey, he emphasised that he acquired other jobs after finding a reputable agency.

“There are so many fly-by-night agencies that just want to take your money, so don’t just sign with one that you find on Facebook. You need to check out their website, see the people they represent and ask people in the industry, and approach an agency that’s credible,” he advised people hoping to break into the entertainment industry.

Now, Khalo is working on two important projects – a fashion catalogue and a TV gig that we should expect to see soon – but neither of which he can talk too much about.

All we know is that with Ryan Seacrest as this young star’s inspiration, we’re expecting great things from Khalo in the near future.
