Makeshift taxi rank is no more

Sandton - Metro police has stepped in and relocated the taxis on Grayston Drive that were causing an obstruction.

In the article, New makeshift taxi rank, week ending 29 April, taxis on Grayston Drive were described as ‘hazardous’.

A resident complained that the taxi rank was causing an obstruction on Grayston Drive. After a Sandton Chronicle journalist reported this issue to Metro police spokesperson, Edna Mamonyane, she engaged with Metro officials to establish whether or not the taxis had permission to be on Grayston Drive.

Mamonyane said, “There has been an operation today [5 May] along Grayston Drive which was co-ordinated by Metro police. There were complaints about taxis causing an obstruction on Grayston Drive and it is for this reason that Metro [police] had to get involved.”

Mamonyane said those looking for public transport in the Sandton area would not be too inconvenienced and taxis would be available in the Benmore area for those who needed to get home after work.

Mamonyane said the taxi rank would not be relocated too far from Grayston Drive.

She added that although these taxis may cause traffic obstructions, they do fulfill a need as many workers in the area need to find a way home after work.

Updates regarding this story will be published as they become available.
