1st Bryanston starts new pack

BRYANSTON – Due to demand, a new Cub pack has opened and youngsters are invited to join.

The 1st Bryanston Scout Group recently started a new Cub pack which meets on Saturday morning from 9am to 11am at their hall on the corner of West Hertford and Grosvenor Roads.

Spokesperson for the group, Gary Pienaar, said that this exciting initiative was to try and accommodate some of the children on their waiting list, as the Friday night Cub Pack was at capacity. He added: “There is currently a lot of interest from parents wanting to get their children involved in Cubs and Scouts as a way to get them outdoors and to teach them valuable life skills.”

A small but enthusiastic group of boys and girls attended the first meeting. The new leader of the Saturday pack, Richard Salt, was happy with the turnout. “It is the start of something new, and together with the Friday pack, we hope to offer a variety of exciting activities and outings which will appeal to children in the seven- to 10-year-old year age group,” he said.

The first meeting of the new pack also saw Maxime Guyot, a 10-year-old Cub, saying farewell to the 1st Bryanston Scout Group as he prepares for a new adventure with his family in Thailand. Maxime originally came to South Africa in 2013 because of his father’s work. His mother had been a Cub in France when she was young, so she enrolled him in the 1st Bryanston Pack. According to Maxime’s mother, the Cubs helped him to grow up in a positive way, and also helped to improve his English. She added that he has discovered a new world, full of fun and new friends.

When asked about his most treasured Cub memory, Maxime responded, “The most amazing place I visited with the Cubs was during a family camp at Vaal Dam near Deneysville. We did a catamaran boat tour and we swam in the lake.

“Cubbing is so much fun because I learnt how to help people and to be aware of my surroundings, also to know safety rules at home and outdoors”.
