HospiceWits is calling on the community for help.
For the past 37 years, the Hospice Association of the Witwatersrand, situated in Orange Grove, has been serving people facing the lonely journey of serious illness.
For those individuals and their families, the much-loved non-profit organisation has been a pillar of strength and support during difficult times, and now it is the one asking for help.
Due to the current economic downturn, HospiceWits’ corporate income, particularly, has been significantly affected as the health sector apparently has lost its appeal to sectors such as skills, social development and job creation.
Receiving no financial assistance from government, HospiceWits’ management has been forced to withdraw funds from its investment account for an extended period to keep its head above water.
Jacqui Kaye, CEO of the organisation stated, “We cannot continue to draw down on our investments for much longer – our board of governors has been meticulous in preserving these funds over the years. As we approach our financial year-end on 31 March, our deficit currently stands at six million.
“It is thanks to our many supporters and donors over the years that we have been able to support two hospice facilities and programmes which include an early childhood development centre in Soweto for HIV/Aids-affected orphans and children.”
She added that last year HospiceWits provided 144 281 patient interventions.
WitsHospice is now appealing to individuals, corporates and other grant-making organisations to assist them through this difficult time.
