Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards nominees announced
JOBURG - The nominees for the 51st annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards have officially been announced and many of the top productions nominated enjoyed amazing runs in Joburg throughout last year.
This special award ceremony has been a significant part of the theatre world for more than 50 years, facilitating the growth of theatre in South Africa and awarding stars in the industry who deserve to be recognised.
A total of 86 theatre productions within 20 categories were considered – some of which were produced locally and others adapted for local stages – and City Buzz is wrapping up five of the nominees that made our jaws drop.
Singin’ in the Rain at The Teatro at Montecasino
Set in 1927, the play tells the story made famous by Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in the iconic 1952 movie, of the first Hollywood musical, when the silver screen found its voice and left the silent movies and some of its stars behind.
We Didn’t Come to Hell for the Croissants: 7 Deadly New Stories for Consenting Adults at P.O.P Art
This show was the winner of the Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award. The show is based on the seven deadly sins of seven writers with seven all-new stories. Jemma Kahn and her irreverent sidekick return in the eagerly-anticipated follow-up to the international cult hit The Epicene Butcher with stories that seduce the sinless and astonish the immoral.
Orpheus in Africa at Joburg Theatre’s Mandela Theatre
Orpheus in Africa tells the little-known story of the American impresario Orpheus McAdoo and his African-American Virginia Jubilee Singers who visited South Africa in 1890s. With South African star tenor Aubrey Poo in the lead role, David Kramer’s new young company will recreate the unique vocal style of that period, singing many of the well-known jubilee spirituals.
Little Shop of Horrors at Montecasino’s Pieter Torien Theatre
It was the upbeat doo-wop, 60s rock n roll and Motown numbers from the original movie that got the crowd going in their seats. The show about the man-eating plant was originally a spoof of the American sci-fi films of the time, however, this onstage production is proudly South African.
You Suck (and Other Inescapable Truths) at P.O.P Art
This show offers excellent tips on how to ‘dance sexy, like in hip-hop’, roll with the cool crew and how to pick up hidden meanings in popular TV shows. You Suck (and Other Inescapable Truths) revolves around growing up and all its complexities.
