One person killed and 11 injured after car rear-ends bakkie

BUCCLEUCH - An Audi rear-ended a bakkie carrying passengers at high speed on the N1 North before the Buccleuch Interchange just before 8pm on 29 February, leaving 11 people injured and one dead.

EMER-G-MED units were deployed and found both vehicles were heavily damaged.

EMER-G-MED spokesperson Max Cohen said, “This is alleged to have happened after the bakkie changed lanes in front of the car. The two occupants of the Audi sustained minor to moderate injuries, while the driver and nine passengers from the bakkie sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical.”

The occupants of the bakkie were found lying on the highway and down the embankment on the side of the N1. “Three were in a critical condition and required immediate Advanced Life Support care. Paramedics worked effortlessly to stabilise the three crictically injured men while the Netcare 911 Dedicated Trauma Air Response Team was called in to assist,” said Cohen.

Despite paramedics’ efforts, one of the patients succumbed to his extensive injuries and was declared dead on scene.

“Once stabilised one patient was airlifted by the Netcare1 aeromedical helicopter to a specialist Johannesburg Trauma hospital and the remaining patients were transported by road to various nearby facilities,” said Cohen.

The Metro police Accident Investigation Unit were on-scene to investigate the exact events leading up to the collision.
