JAM hosts donor appreciation event in Morningside

MORNINGSIDE – An annual donor appreciation event was hosted by JAM, a South African non-governmental organisation, to show gratitude towards all the businesses and individuals who contribute towards the cause.

Guests were invited to celebrate the success of 2015 in making a difference to young lives.

The organisation’s focus is on the nutritional feeding needs of children in care centres located in informal settlements. The organisation was founded by Peter and Ann Pretorius in 1984. Since then, JAM has served more than 1.2 billion meals and currently supplies a nutritious meal to more than one million people daily.

“We’ve reached and even surpassed our goals last year,” said Peter.

“As we look into the future, we’re going into a severe drought where South Africa will have to import maize to other countries.”

The countries that benefit from the organisation’s feeding programmes include South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda and South Sudan. “We’re gearing up for the coming hungry season and growing food to feed the children in the year to come,” added Peter.

Former Miss South Africa and businesswoman, Basetsana Kumalo, was invited to speak at the donor appreciation event. She is also a proud board member of the organisation. “This organisation alone feeds thousands of children a day,” she said.

“For me, it is a humble pleasure to be a part of JAM. I honour all the donors who continue to go forward to make a difference.”

The organisation is also responsible for training community farmers and establishing vegetable gardens in Early Childhood Development centres as well as in communities.
