A possible e-toll price hike

JOBURG – Gauteng motorists who reluctantly pay e-tolls will be surprised to know that prices of the tolled Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project roads are set to increase by almost five percent on 1 March.

The Automobile Association (AA) has advised that the announcement of the increase is contained in the Government Gazette (#39695) issued on 15 February.

AA spokesperson Layton Beard said, “We are making motorists aware of these increases as the information does not appear on Sanral’s [South African National Roads Agency] e-toll website, nor are we aware of any of Sanral’s customers being directly informed thereof.”

Beard added that there was no mention of any adjustments to the capped limit for tagged users in the Government Gazette.

The possible increases of e-toll rates come barely six months after the tariffs were reduced as a result of a public outcry. Discounts of up to 60 percent were offered on outstanding balances before September 2015.

“Once again we would have preferred Sanral to be more upfront with this information, and to try and win over support, rather than relying on other organisations such as ourselves to inform the media and the public,” an AA statement read.
