UPDATE: Journalist shot in Sandton

SANDTON - A man, believed to be a journalist, was shot in Sandton on the evening of 30 January during a hijacking.

UPDATE: 31 January 2016, 12:30pm – Despite reports from Netcare 911, South African Police’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini has stated that the journalist was not killed in the hijacking.

Dlamini said “Police are currently investigating a case of hijacking and attempted murder after four suspects in a BMW hijacked a mini taxi of an Angolan journalist on 30 January. Dlamini said that the 11 journalists were travelling on the M1 when at the Grayston Off ramp they were cut off by a BMW. Four armed suspects made their way out and got into the taxi. One drove while the others searched the victims. Dlamini added that when they got to Linbro Park they came across a police patrol car before they made a U-turn with the BMW fleeing the scene. Two of the suspects fled on foot and began to shoot randomly, hitting one of the journalists in the upper body.”

The journalist was transported to a near by hospital and is currently being treated. Dlamini said that the suspects are still at large.

INITIAL REPORT: Chris Botha, media liaison for Netcare 911, said paramedics found the man lying on the ground. The man was pronounced dead on the scene due to extensive injuries.

Botha said police were investigating and the cause of the shooting was unknown.

eNCA is reporting that the journalist is believed to be from Angola and that he was shot during an alleged attempted hijacking on Grayston Drive.
