The arts to rock Orientation Week at Wits

BRAAMFONTEIN – Orientation Week will hit the University of the Witwatersrand from 1 to 6 February and the Wits Theatre will showcase plays from Wits School of Arts (WSOA) Drama students.

The theatre wants to make the transition into the big, bustling world of university as smooth as possible.

The theatre’s The Orientation Week programme is filled with plays and music concerts and is designed to ease new and returning students into the academic year and make the first few weeks at university memorable.

From 1 to 5 February, six plays, all directed and performed by students from WSOA Drama will be shown. At the end of each year, students are invited to make artistic submissions in a bid to be part of the programme and then a panel of judges chooses the winning ‘0-Week’ line-up.

On 4 February, the Wits Choir will present a concert in the Main Theatre at 6pm. On 6 February, the Wits Theatre has teamed up with the music department and will stage The Composers’ Concert at 7.30pm in the Wits Great Hall. The concert will feature new work by three of Wits music’s composition lecturers, Andile Khumalo, Cameron Harris and Chris Letcher; while performers include Peter Cartwright on piano, Morné van Heerden on clarinet and Magda de Vries on marimba.

Tickets cost R10 each and can be bought at Wits Theatre Box office for the duration of Orientation Week.
