“They cannot beat us twice in a row,” fumed some ardent supporters of the Glamour Boys.
“They closed the season on a high after beating us 3-1 in the Telkom Knockout final, and as if that was not enough, they went on to crush another giant of South African football, Orlando Pirates 3-0 in a league match.”
Avid Amakhosi fan, Zanele Khathide of Orlando East said, “Sparks will fly on Saturday but if they win this round again, they will have certainly consolidated their spot on the top of the log and their chance of taking the Absa Premiership title.”
A statement released by Chiefs read: “This humdinger will mark the return to action for the two teams after the festive break. Our loss to them in the Telkom Knockout final is water under the bridge.”
Chiefs marketing director, Jessica Motaung enthused, “It is good to be back in the New Year. It makes it more interesting when you start with arguably one of the biggest games in the league. Despite the added spice arising from the Telkom Knockout final result, this fixture is always anticipated in the premiership calendar.”
Chiefs coach Steve Komphela added, “We have moved on from the disappointment of losing in the cup final.”
Downs coach Pitso Mosimane feared a backlash from Chiefs. “I am certain to get the most fierce of backlashes from Chiefs but with that said, I am on the other hand confident my boys have nerves of steel to withstand the pressure and even emerge victorious again,” said Mosimane.
