Community mourns the death of head reservist of Sandton police

SANDTON – The Sandton police’s former head of reservists passed away on 6 January.

Lieutenant Colonel Andre de Klerk from Sandton police confirmed Peter Berner’s (74) death, but could not confirm the cause of death.

Andrew McMurray, chairperson of the Sandton Community Police Forum (CPF) Sector 4 sub-forum said he knew and closely worked with the deceased for six to seven years.

He said Berner was heavily involved with the CPF as well as residents’ associations in the Buccleuch area.

“After he had a seizure a couple of years back, he became wheelchair bound and was not involved in the forum and associations as much,” explained McMurray.

He added that Berner served all people’s interests before his own.

“He was honest, helpful and selfless in his work,” said McMurray.

“[Berner] was the best person to have in the community and this is truly a sad loss for us.”

McMurray is also not sure what the cause of death was, however, he mentioned that Berner had been ill for a while.
