Help keep Sadag helplines open this Christmas

JOBURG – The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) is appealing to residents to help the organisation this December by making a donation towards their initiatives.

The organisation is asking for donations for their suicide helplines which will be operating during Christmas, or to purchase a Speaking Book.

Zane Wilson, founder of Sadag, explained that the organisation was constantly overwhelmed by the number of calls their helplines received, especially during the festive season.

“Not only [are we overwhelmed] on a practical side, but from a financial side too, especially since we do not get any financial support from the Department of Health, which means we can pay over R45 000 each month for the cost of these calls alone,” she said.

She urged residents to consider donating between R25 and R50 towards keeping the helplines open during December.

Additionally, residents can buy and donate a Speaking Book, which consists of 16 pages covering topics such as suicide, non-smoking and safe sex, to an underprivileged school.

“These [books] would go to disadvantaged and rural schools which can help [in] preventing suicide,” she said.

Wilson concluded by stressing that the organisation depended on funding from the public and urged people to consider donating. “Your gift is an investment that can save lives.”
