Councillors bid 2015 farewell with best wishes for the festive season

SANDTON – As 2015 comes to a close, ward councillors reflect on the year that was and wish their communities a happy and safe festive season over the December holidays.

Ward 91 councillor, Andrew Stewart wants community members to be wary during this year’s festive season. “Christmas time is also big for criminals,” he added. “If people are driving to the coast, be particularly cautious on the roads.”

Stewart is most pleased by the water pipe upgrades that took place in Strathavon in 2015 but disappointed by the collapse of the Grayston Drive pedestrian bridge, as well as the mismanagement of traffic during the 2015 road construction projects in Sandton.

Ward 90 councillor, Anthony Still wants everyone to have a good break during the festive season. “Try to recharge your batteries,” he said. “Drive carefully. And spare a smile for those on the peripheries of society who often feel their marginalisation more keenly in these periods.”

He also said he has had an exciting year learning and familiarising himself with how the tapestry of the City fits together.

“There is still lots that is good but an equal amount that needs fixing,” he added.

Ward 102 councillor, David Potter said, “I wish all my residents and businesses happy holidays. I give thanks to the City officials that have been responsive to issues in my ward.”

Potter added that residents’ associations form an integral part of his ward and he gave thanks to the street and suburb committees for the work they have done in 2015. “They have worked tirelessly to ensure that their suburbs are maintained adequately,” he added.

He said one of the challenges he observed in 2015 within his ward was the lack of law enforcement which remains a concern.

Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood, wished community members a peaceful and relaxing time over the December holidays. “We have achieved a lot during this year,” he added.

He particularly acknowledged the work done on the various projects in his ward. These projects included the installation of street lights along Cumberland Road in Bryanston as well as the various road surfacing projects.

“I hope that my residents have a wonderful and restful festive season, travel safely and come back refreshed to meet the challenges of the new year,” said Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp. He is pleased with the numerous water pipe replacement projects and street light installations that took place in his ward during 2015. However, he said it has been a tough year with residents having to be patient with the increased number of electricity outages and the constant disruptions in water supply throughout 2015.
