Puppetry in the library

BRYANSTON - The Bryanston Library gave a special gift to local children when they hosted their annual puppet show. The show was performed by puppeteer Ann Parker as one of many end-of-year activities at the library.

Chairperson of Friends of Bryanston Library, Juliet Manning said, “The show just encourages children to come to the library to listen to stories, and it’s a fun event for people to come to the library.”

Manning added that it acted as a way to open the children’s eyes to the great experiences the library offered, including a Wednesday story time which takes place weekly at 2.30pm.

“The children love listening to stories and reading,” she said.

“We’re trying to encourage a habit of good reading with the children.”

The show hosted about 65 children and their parents who were entertained by Parker and a plethora of animal puppets.

Parker, whose show is called Ann’s Crazy Travelling Zoo, wowed the children with some of her animal friends, adding joy and laughter to the afternoon.

She said, “I hope the children take away an appreciation of animals. I can teach them about what the animals like to eat and what they do.”

Ward 106 councillor Stephen Moore commended the library on their attempts to develop a new generation of readers. Moore said, “I used to go to the library as a child. So to see that, despite modern progression, there is still a definite role [for the library], and it’s great to see a vibrant staff still involved and getting children to read.”
